The inaugural Greater Sydney Cup was a success for local and visiting drivers and their friends and family.
Run across the June long weekend in NSW, the Cup included Club Round 2 on Saturday and Round 3 on Sunday, with Qualifying, Heats and Finals on each day.
Participation was up on Round 1 with drivers appreciating the new track and outgrid markings as well as other improvements around the facility.
With seven categories run throughout each day running, it was great to see Cadet 9 and 12 have a healthy number of competitors producing some really great racing. The TaG and TaG-restricted drivers are never a dull race with the big and fast KZ’s bringing on a show. It’s great to see these drivers taking on the challenge and working out our Greater Sydney Kart Club track at Indy 800.
Both days of the Cup were clear and sunny with lap times reducing as the track improved, with drivers who settled into a good rhythm, used patience and 100% commitment making some great passes on the track.
While Saturday was once again incident free, Sunday saw a red flag when two cadets locked wheels and slid into the tyre barrier at fairly slow speed, without injury. It’s good to see that across our three Rounds of racing, the track is proving safe for beginners and experienced karters alike.
Again the event provided a fun family atmosphere, with free sausage sizzle, coffee cart, snow cone and fairy floss cart, Canteen and plenty of awards and prizes. A BIG thanks to the Teams and Mums and Dads that come out with their sons and daughters, and also to the families coming from outside Sydney and interstate to race across the weekend.
Bring-a-Friend and Junior Sprockets a great success
During the Cup, we held our first ever Bring-a-Friend program, with a special 10-minute session each day for each of the Junior and Seniors first-time karters. This provided a great way to introduce interested drivers to karting during the event. The Karting Australia Junior Sprockets program was also run on the Saturday evening, and it was great to see our members helping out with the setup of this special event.
Greater Sydney Cup locked in for 2023
Karting Australia New South Wales and Karting Australia would like to congratulate the Greater Sydney Kart Club on the running of the inaugural Greater Sydney Cup. The event was an outstanding success with drivers coming from the Far South Coast, Newcastle and Victoria to compete. Following the success of the race meeting Karting Australia New south Wales will be locking in Greater Sydney Cup as an annual event for the June long weekend.
